Iran Guards Launch Naval Drills Near Strategic Gulf Islands

Published on August 2, 2023

Iran's Revolutionary Guards conducted naval drills near the strategic Gulf islands that are controlled by Iran but also claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exercises, centered mainly around Abu Musa island and the Greater and Lesser Tunb, occurred following an increase in the US naval presence in the Gulf. The duration of the drills was not specified. The islands, located near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial sea passage for a significant portion of the world's oil output, have been a longstanding point of contention between the UAE and Iran. The IRGC's naval vessels utilized the Ghadir cruise missile system and Fath 360 ballistic missiles during the drills, along with unmanned surface vessels equipped with artificial intelligence, warplanes, helicopters, and aerial drones. These maneuvers come amid tensions between Iran and the US, with the US military deploying additional forces to the Middle East to deter potential Iranian actions in the Gulf.
