The US Navy's Task Force 59, part of the Fifth Fleet, is conducting an exercise in the Persian Gulf to integrate robotics and AI into naval operations. The task force has assembled over a dozen uncrewed platforms, including surface vessels, submersibles, and aerial drones. These autonomous systems serve as distributed eyes and ears, monitoring the ocean surface, detecting suspicious vessels, and distinguishing between tankers and smugglers. The aim is to enhance visibility and reconnaissance capabilities without risking human lives. However, concerns arise about the potential for autonomous systems with lethal capacity, as rival nations like China are also investing heavily in military autonomy. The rapid development of AI in military applications raises ethical questions about accountability and the potential risks associated with inscrutable machine-learning algorithms.
