US Navy ‘operationalizes’ drones in 4th Fleet exercise
Published on July 21, 2023
The U.S. Navy used air and surface drones during its UNITAS 2023 naval exercise near Latin America, marking the first major event since the region's second unmanned operations hub was announced. The goal was to improve maritime domain awareness and flag potential problems like illegal fishing and trafficking for limited crewed ships and aircraft. The integration of unmanned aerial systems and surface vessels was mature enough to be piped into watch floors in Cartagena, Colombia, and at sea on the Peruvian Navy ship Pisco. The goal is not to experiment with new unmanned and artificial intelligence tools, but to learn how to operationalize proven systems.
