AFRL Airlift Challenge tests AI-based logistics for future operations

The Air Force Research Laboratory hosted an online Airlift Challenge competition using AI to plan efficient airlift operations. Participants created algorithms to direct aircraft in delivering cargo, accounting for disruptions. The competition identified innovative solutions to complex airlift planning, gathering insights to improve airlift efficiency.


The Airlift Challenge simulation tested AI agents on increasingly complex scenarios. Independent researcher Dr. John Kolen won first place, followed by Raytheon researchers in second. University of Florida students received an honorable mention. The competition attracted interest and discussion, helping the Air Force innovate traditional airlift objectives.
