U.S. Falling Behind China in Critical Tech Race, Report Finds

Published on July 18, 2023

A new report from commercial data company Govini warns that the United States is at risk of losing the technology competition with China unless it takes significant measures to strengthen its defense industrial base and integrate advanced capabilities into its military systems. Using its Ark.ai commercial data platform, Govini evaluated 12 technologies critical to national security and found that the United States is falling behind China in terms of patents granted in each country, which are seen as a leading indicator of technological dominance. The report highlights that the United States heavily relies on Chinese suppliers for many critical technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), where China has been advancing rapidly.

Govini's CEO Tara Murphy Dougherty emphasizes the need for the United States to attract and scale non-traditional companies outside the traditional defense system, particularly in the field of AI. The report suggests that significant change is required, including a better model between the federal government's research and development initiatives and its expectations from the commercial sector. The United States must be more strategic in its R&D efforts and make investments accordingly to maintain its position as a global leader in critical technologies. The report warns that China aims to become the number one economy and military power in the world by 2049 and urges the United States to make data-driven decisions to ensure it remains competitive in this existential competition.
