DOD CDAO Rethinks Adopting Department-Wide AI Acquisition Guidance
The Defense Department's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office is reconsidering the development of a department-wide AI acquisition guidance, according to Deputy Chief Margaret Palmieri. Speaking at a RAND Corporation event, Palmieri highlighted the need to strike a balance between providing a core set of tools and criteria for developers while avoiding over-centralization. The office already has core acquisition vehicles in place, such as Tradewind, which focuses on speed, industry collaboration, and contract agility. Additionally, the office is exploring the application of large language models through the Global Information Dominance Experiments (GIDE) and addressing concerns about the potential negative consequences of generative AI, particularly the issue of "hallucination." Collaboration with industry is sought to address these downsides effectively.
