Ethics of emerging technologies on the battlefield
In this interesting article, Animesh Jain, a Policy Fellow with the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India – Policy Analytics and Insights Unit, discusses the ethical considerations surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in warfare, particularly in relation to autonomous weapon systems, battlefield ethics, domestic implications, and target selection ethics. The article highlights the importance of recognizing potential ethical challenges from the outset and draw attention to the historical example of the Manhattan Project participants, who initially believed their work was ethical but later confronted the devastating consequences of their involvement.
The article further explores the role of AI and Machine Learning (ML) technologies in military applications, including autonomous weapon systems, AI-assisted decision-making, and intelligence gathering. Drawing on Dr. Jorrit Kamminga and MG Robin Fontes (US Army, Retired), who are both on RAINCLOUD, Jain emphasizes that Ukraine, due to its ongoing conflict, is serving as a laboratory for the development and deployment of AI-enabled or AI-enhanced systems in warfare, providing insights into the future of AI warfare. The article goes on to discuss how AI is being utilized by different sides in the conflict, ranging from identifying targets using AI drones to controversial facial recognition software.
