What the Pentagon Thinks About Artificial Intelligence
Interesting opinion article by Kathleen H. Hicks, US Deputy Secretary of Defense about how the Pentagon addresses AI onboarding in defense. The DoD has worked for more than a decade on developing AI ethics, for example, through the ethical principles, the responsible AI strategy and the updated directive on autonomy in weapon systems.
The US and China clearly have different approaches, especially when it comes to technological innovation, but Hicks interestingly opens the door for a dialogue with China about ethical and responsible AI should this peer competitor really want to go that way. For the moment, however, the overall message is clear: The US and China are engaged in a (technological) competition and the US clearly intends to win that competition.
