India Initiates Development Of Massive Armed XLUUV

Published on April 24, 2023

India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) initiates a new project to both design and develop Extra Large Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (XLUUVs). The Indian Navy is reportedly interested in procuring up to 12 XLUUVs that have cleared ‘all trials.’

A document released by the MoD in March 2023 specifies that the XLUUV may be up to 50 meters in length with its payload, a maximum height of 10 meters, and a maximum weight of under 300 tons without ballast. These specifications would make the Indian XLUUV one of the largest to date. It is intended to serve purposes including intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and mine warfare. As this project is slated for a prototype by 2025, other projects concerning the development of eight smaller High Endurance Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (HEAUVs) are being planned.
