RAF-Sponsored Jackal VTOL UAV Fires LLMs

A new vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) called the Jackal successfully conducts firing trials with Thales Lightweight Multirole Missiles. The test was conducted in October 2022, but only publicly revealed in April 2023. Notably, it was sponsored by the United Kingdom Royal Air Force’s (RAF) Rapid Capabilities Office.

The Jackal was designed by UK-based drone company FlyBy Technology along with Turkish drone partner companies FlyBVLOS Technology and Maxwell Innovations. Electrically powered with four sets of twin contra-rotating propellers, the Jackal can fire Lightweight multirole missiles to strike both conventional and asymmetric targets without recoil.
