Navy creating unmanned, AI operations hub within US Southern Command

Following the successes of the United States 5th Fleet’s Task Force 59 in experimenting with the integration of AI and uncrewed systems with maritime security, the US Navy’s 4th Fleet will ‘expand its work with unmanned and artificial intelligence tools.’ Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro remarked that the new capabilities will debut in July 2023.

The 4th Fleet will make use of these emerging technologies in Central and South America. Ostensibly, the new capabilities integration will be designed to ‘crack down on narcotics and human trafficking’ and illegal fishing by China. Critically, the 4th Fleet will not simply borrow the 5th’s command structure. Rather, the incorporation of uncrewed tech and AI, and all data collected, will run through all ‘existing offices at the 4th fleet.’
