Japan restricts chipmaking equipment exports as it aligns with US China curbs

Japan announces that it will restrict the export of 23 types of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The new restrictions bring Japan’s semiconductor export controls in line with the United States’ efforts to stunt China’s access to advanced chips.

While China is not explicitly referenced in the announcement, the United States needs both Japan and the Netherlands to effectively limit Chinese access to advanced chips and computing technologies. The new Japanese controls will take effect in July 2023, targeting six categories of manufacturing equipment.
