Published on March 28, 2023
New Zealand has expressed interest in joining the trilateral AUKUS agreement, joining the ranks of the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. New Zealand hopes to, ‘participate in the development of military technology such as AI, quantum computing, and advanced information technology.’
However, New Zealand’s entrance into AUKUS would come with a self-imposed caveat, the nation would uphold its commitment to remaining nuclear-free. New Zealand’s Defense Minister, Andrew Miller, expressed interest in the second of the alliance’s two pillars, which focuses on the advancement of emerging technologies in a non-nuclear capacity.
