How Self-Flying F-16s Will Enable Future Fighter Drones
Published on March 28, 2023
The Air Force is modifying F-16s to experiment with autonomous flights. But their goal is not merely uncrewed and unsupervised flights for F-16s: the Venom project aims to develop an ‘AI engine’ capable of flying a variety of current and future aircraft.
Autonomous F-16s, and other aircraft, would fly collaboratively with human pilots. The idea behind the Venom project is to maximize the benefits of collaborative AI by ensuring the software engine can operate with and alongside a diversity of aircraft. A total of USD $49.7 million is requested by the Pentagon for the Venom project this year.
