Ukraine is betting on drones to strike deep into Russia

The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ innovative uses of drones in its war with Russia has elicited an outpouring of commentary on the future of warfare. Ukrainian forces deploy drones in a variety of ways: commercial drones are used for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR); some are improvised loitering munitions; and others are capable of conducting strike missions from ‘hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.’

The Ukrainian military is making a number of organizational changes to further leverage drone warfare, particularly for long-distance strikes into the Russian mainland. In part, these changes are designed to ‘link Ukrainian military tech with international companies and capital.’ This ‘drive to deregulate,’ it is hoped, will allow the Ukrainian military to retain its innovative edge.
