Pentagon’s historic R&D request has billions for advanced networks, AI

The United States Pentagon’s funding request for 2024 includes the largest innovation budget in its history. A total of $145 billion is requested for research and development in ‘critical technology’ areas, including artificial intelligence. It also calls for strengthening ties with industry.

The request notably includes $687 million for the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Rapid Defense Experimentation Reserve. The nearly doubled request increase from the previous year reflects a desire to speed up ‘the pathway from joint concept to experimentation to fielding systems.’ It also, finally, calls for an additional $115 million in funding for the Office of Strategic Capital, designed to be a source of patient capital for startups.
