AUKUS Sub Deal is one Pillar of Regional Security
In an effort to check China’s growing power in the Pacific, the Australia-U.K.-U.S. security partnership announced plans to unveil a new nuclear-powered fleet of submarines. The multi-stage plan will increase Australia’s familiarity with nuclear-powered submarines, then increase presence of the vessels in Australian waters.
The AUKUS partnership has raised concerns in China’s government with a spokesperson claiming it is, ‘An outdated Cold War zero-sum mentality,' and that 'It will only exacerbate an arms race … and hurt regional peace and stability.’ However, the new AUKUS agreement focuses on more than just submarines. The partners will collaborate on artificial intelligence, robotics and quantum computing in the following stages of the agreement.
