Israel’s ‘Black Snake’ armed drone squadron comes out of the shadows
Published on March 13, 2023
Israel-based defense electronics company Elbit systems’ Hermes-450 “Zik” drone is coming to light following the lift of an Israeli gag order on armed drones. The uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) is used by the Israeli Defense Force’s (IDF) Squadron 161, also known as ‘The Black Snake.’
Squadron 161 primarily uses the Hermes-450 in counter-terror missions. A commander and an operator sit side-by-side as data is transmitted by the UAV, allowing the mission commander to make a judgment on the use of lethal force. The Hermes-450 often operates in conjunction with UAVs from other units, including the Israeli Aerospace Industries’ (IAI) Heron-TP.
