Chinese Balloon Means NORAD Now Getting Proper Attention, VanHerck Says
United States General Glen D. VanHerck, head of U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), believes that the high-altitude surveillance balloon spotted above the US in February 2023 ‘was a great opportunity’ to put the spotlight on domain awareness capabilities. His comments came at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Warfare Symposium.
While noting some caution, VanHerck expressed his desire for AI-enabled, perhaps using machine learning, detection capabilities to root out future unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). Rather than using AI for directly connecting sensors with shooters, VanHerck wants to connect ‘sensor to decision-maker.’ He believes loitering, autonomous uncrewed platforms are ‘the future’ of homeland defense.
