The Reaper UAV Is Getting Its Own Drone Swarm

The United States Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) looks to transform the uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) known as the Reaper into a mothership for drone swarms. The Reaper would have a single human operator.

Autonomous swarms of drones commanded by a UAV ‘mothership’ are ideally suited for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) in the immediate term. It also allows the Air Force to reduce the number of human personnel needed to control such systems. AFSOC’s vision includes using artificial intelligence and human-machine interfaces for simultaneously operating small and large drones.
