Should Algorithms Control Nuclear Launch Codes? The US Says No
The United States’ ‘Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy,’ released at the 2023 REAIM Summit, is the country’s attempt to regulate the integration of AI with military technology in a responsible manner. It is designed to be non-binding but internationally standard-setting.
The Declaration maintains that humans should remain in the decision-making loop regarding lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS). Among the themes discussed in the aftermath of its release is the role of human control in nuclear weapons use. Perhaps more notable than battlefield LAWS, then, is its position that ‘humans alone should make decisions around the use of nuclear weapons.’ The role of AI in and around nuclear weapons is critical and subject to continued ethical and regulatory debate.
