Back From the Future: Stop Saying the Military Has An Innovation Problem

It is common to suggest that the United States Department of Defense (DoD) has an innovation problem. Erik Johnson argues, in contrast, that it has an acquisition strategy that has failed to keep pace with the digital era.

The rise of software, in particular, has presented an enormous challenge for the DoD. Acquisition tends to follow a ‘hardware-first’ mindset which neglects the processes and players involved with modern innovation. A hefty dose, Johnson argues, of acquisition reform centered around communication and collaboration between the DoD and Silicon Valley is necessary.
