Dozens of nations, including the US and China, have gathered at the REAIM conference, hosted at The Hague, co-hosted by South Korea and The Netherlands. The countries considered regulation to address concerns around AI developments in the military, citing the risks of ‘unintended consequences.’
Although experts considered a treaty regulating AI, similar to those on nuclear or chemical weapons, they agreed that any serious motions are a long way out. Former senior NATO commander, General Jörg Vollmer, emphasized the importance of keeping a human in the loop, stating, ‘Never let humans escape the responsibility they must assume, never, ever entrust it to the AI.’
