M1 Abrams Tank Tested With Artificial Intelligence Targeting System
Published on February 17, 2023
The United States military's Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) releases images from 2022 showing an M1 Abrams tank equipped with an AI-enabled target recognition system.
The targeting system was developed under the Advanced Targeting and Lethality Aided System (ATLAS) program. Adjacent to ATLAS, but not connected to the tank in the images, is a sensor system ‘used for detecting and scoring hits using lasers to simulate combat and assess battle damage.’ ATLAS requires that a human remains in the decision-making loop, and its testing by the US Army is a step toward speeding up targeting selection and the elimination of threats using AI.
