US Woos Other Nations for Military-AI Ethics Pact
The United States will use the political momentum of the Summit on Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM 2023) to announce a new ethical framework for the military uses of AI and autonomy. It is intended to garner co-signers from around the world in addition to painting a contrast between the AI practices of the US and China.
US Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security Bonnie Jenkins noted that the declaration will be a first step toward an ‘international consensus’ on responsible uses of AI in military affairs. The declaration will emphasize human control throughout the life cycles of AI systems and strict human control in any decision-making related to nuclear weapons. The US hopes to appeal to Asian and Latin American countries, in addition to traditional allies, with the framework.
