India’s first indigenously-developed uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) made its flying debut at Aero India 2023. The Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance Beyond Horizon (TAPAS BH) flew for six hours at an altitude of 15,000ft.

The TAPAS is effectively designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). It is capable of automatic take-off and landing, can carry weapons up to 50kg, and its developers claim it can go undetected at a range of 70km. The TAPAS is part of the country’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Export orders for the UAV are anticipated, in addition to existing acquisition requests by the Indian armed forces.
