Landmark Exchange of UAS Control Between Airborne Crews

UK-based defense company QinetiQ’s DATUM team successfully demonstrates the live, airborne exchange of control over an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) between human operators in separate, crewed aircraft. The demonstration was conducted with the support of the UK Royal Navy.

The 744 Naval Air Squadron was able to task the UAS with specific mission instructions that enabled human operators to swap control during flight. It is a particularly dynamic use of human-machine teaming using uncrewed systems. The eventual goal is to be able to reliably and securely switch control of uncrewed systems during missions.
