New EDA project seeks to enhance combat unmanned ground systems technology
Published on February 3, 2023
The European Defence Agency launches its largest research and technology project - the development of ‘highly autonomous combat unmanned ground systems,’ or UGVs. Bringing together 9 EU member-states and 28 industry partners, the project aims to develop ‘functional modules’ that each contributes to autonomous UGVs.
European firms working on AI and autonomous systems, including Milrem Robotics, Rheinmetall, and Patria, are involved with the UGV project. The project explicitly aims to design these UGVs with specific levels of autonomy and the degree to which humans are kept in the loop of decision-making is a stated interest.
