France plans to use the startup downturn to come out on top in Europe

The only major startup ecosystem in Europe that raised more money in 2022 than 2021 is France. The French government is taking notice, investing several hundred million euros into ‘deeptech’ startups and exploring entrepreneurial reforms. The French government’s goal, among others, is to nurture the development of 10 public ‘unicorns’ by 2025.

It has notably singled out cybersecurity and security-related startup jobs and unicorns, alongside broader pushes in areas like space technology. Public investment in domestic startups and the French government’s recent interest in autonomous and uncrewed military technologies make France a prominent source for defense and AI.
