Should a robot be allowed to kill you?

Is it ever okay for a fully autonomous machine to kill a human? While there may be an informal, global consensus on this core ethical challenge in the abstract, the longer the Russo-Ukraine war goes on, the more pertinent the question becomes.

 

The war in Ukraine is seeing unprecedented uses of drones and other uncrewed technologies. Systems with the autonomous ability to engage in lethal force are being developed in the background, with a greater likelihood of deployment as the conflict drags on. Legal battles concerning the possibility of ‘killer robots’ are destined to intensify alongside these developments.

The U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD) guidance on autonomous weapon systems - Directive 3000.09 - is now updated. The Directive, which does not prohibit the development of any particular system, regulates the development and uses of autonomous systems. The update reflects advancements in AI-enabled military technology since the Directive’s inception and the increasingly pervasive ethical question
