Marine Corps Buying Valkyrie Drones to Investigate ‘Future Autonomous Platforms’

Contrary to earlier reporting that the United States Navy signed a deal with defense company Kratos for large uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV), it is the U.S. Marines who have made the deal. The effort to develop new autonomous platforms is collaborative between the Navy and the Marines.

 

The deal involves two large UAVs called XQ-58A Valkyries. The Marines intend on using these drones experimentally in an effort to create new strike, intelligence, and electronic warfare capabilities. Given their size and multidimensional roles, the Valkyries are also being explored for their potential role as a ‘mothership’ for smaller drones.
