Abhijit Singh argues that the Indian Navy’s use of autonomous underwater drones (AUVs) complicates the ethical challenges of warfare. Rather than easing the burdens of war and responsibility, AI systems may, he argues, add more layers to them.
The Indian armed forces, and the Navy especially, are pushing forward the acquisition of maritime drones in a newfound recognition of their warfighting capabilities. But such autonomous systems, Singh argues, disperse accountability across broad networks, lack internal decision-making transparency, and tie lethal uses of force to limited training data.
