As a Groundbreaking Unmanned Task Force Hits Stride, Navy Mulls the Next One

The United States Navy’s Task Force 59 has achieved full operational capability within the Fifth Fleet. The task force has quickly risen to prominence for its integration of unmanned and AI systems with manned vessels. That integration, now seen by the Fifth Fleet’s commander as a success, will lead to other, more complex initiatives.

 

Using commercial unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), like the Saildrone vessels, the Fifth Fleet used the sometimes-contentious waters around the Arabian Peninsula to test their contributions maritime domain awareness and security.
