New in 2023: Here comes the first-ever surface drone fleet

The United States Navy will be standing up its first-ever unmanned surface fleet in 2023.

 

Following a year focused on the European theater due to the Russo-Ukraine war, the “unmanned surface vehicles” (USVs) come amid new momentum for the integration of artificial intelligence with unmanned systems. The U.S. Navy’s Task Force 59, specifically, spent much of 2022 testing USVs in Middle Eastern waters, with encouraging results for this year.
